Friday was low-key until early afternoon – more shopping and Vietnamese food (had my first banh mi!) until it was time to head to Punchbowl. When we arrived, we were just happy to be around so much family. Perfect setting.
The service was short and sweet – officiated by Pastor Andy of the Hawaii Kai Community Church. He was a very eloquent speaker and incorporated some background on Baba’s life, as well as a lovely poem. It really was nice.
He’s also an official with the Honolulu Police Department – he told us he’s met some Hawaii 5-0 stars, too – and some cops are extras on the show.
After Pastor Andy’s words, the urn was picked up by grounds people, transferred from the Veteran’s Affairs representative and placed in the ‘vault’ – Baba was then officially reunited with Grandpa.
It was a wonderful service. If you’ve ever have a chance to visit Punchbowl on your visit to the Hawaiian Islands, I would definitely recommend it. Between the strong feeling of patriotism you feel, the gorgeous views and the gentle breeze flowing through the crater, it truly is a lovely place. Naturally, a venue for some more family photos…
Due to the timing of the memorial service, there were several family members that were unable to make it to Hawaii to join us, but we were thankful to have the family there that we did. That evening, we toasted Baba’s life with a Japanese-themed dinner at Yanagi Sushi.
It was a grand way to end the evening, and a wonderful way to celebrate with everyone.

Thanks, Kath. It was a wonderful celebration of family
So amazing. Your Baba would have loved it. We did a photo collage like that for my grandfather– it is a nice thing to keep and look at afterwards! Love to you and your fam <3
Thanks, Lizzie
So beautiful and such a lovely day to honor Baba’s life.
