It’s no secret I’ve had this on my mind lately.
And by lately, I mean, really, since last fall when my buddy Kim mentioned she’d be running. But, I let 2012 go, since there were so many other things going on – Wine and Dine, WDW Marathon on the horizon…etc – so it kind of took a back seat for a while…until they had to go and announce this whole BIG BANG SERIES nonsense

Feb 1, 2013 – Facebook
So, get this: they are unveiling a super amazing new line-up of medals that change each year with different shuttles – and between now and 2017, there are PERK medals for completing three races in five years (Milky Way Challenge), or going all out and completing all five (Intergalactic Challenge) in the series.
SIGN ME UP.
Well, I mean, figuratively. I definitely want to sign up, but I am also trying to be a responsible human and not dictate our entire year by what races are when but I literally cannot stop thinking about this race. And my BRFs (best running friends) on twitter are no help!
Not only do they tweet me the registration link, they send me pictures:

Marcia‘s awesome pic!

Thanks, Matt.
Along with them I’ve got Linzie re-posting those amazing medals on my Facebook wall…and Megan giving me a hard time about tempting her to go along, too
So you might be wondering, what’s so great about this race, other than the promise of fantastic bling? Well, here’s a few of the features highlighted on their website:
- Start your race to the roar of a Space Shuttle countdown and liftoff on the Jumbotron!
- The Expo will be held at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.
- “Space” Props along course and at finish line area.
- “Space” Themed Water/Aid Stations all along course
- Volunteers in NASA-like uniforms and hats
- “Space” Photo opportunity with astronauts walking around the race site
- Opportunity to win a “One Day Space Adventure” for up to a family of four!
All registrants will now receive a Moonpie at our Health & Fitness expo!
On top of these amazing fun things, the finishers receive a finisher’s towel, (perfect for the beach/keeping warm after the race) the course is known to be flat and fast, (another BQ opportunity?!) and well, all those amazing peer pressuring friends above will be there
So yeah…about that Space Race….
ETA:
How about some promo codes? Register today!! ;D
SCM2013 - $10 off Full
SCH2013 - $5 off half

I so badly want to do this one as Jeannie and Major Nelson.
OMG PLEASE DO THIS! They have a costume contest too!!!!!!
BEST “SPACE” COSTUME CONTEST
Those wearing the top two best costumes as judged by participant applause will win $50 and $25 respectively. Make sure your costume is safe to others and allows you to run easily without overheating and the ability to see clearly. There will be a costume contest after the half marathon awards presentation and another immediately after the marathon awards presentation. Any finisher of either race is eligible for either contest, but not both.
oh my gosh.
Best COSTUME?????
INTERGALACTIC CHALLENGE?!?!?!?
RIGHT!?!?!?!?!
I really wish I could do this … it’ll make sense soon why I’m opting not to.
If it is what I think it is, congrats
Sounds like a fun December trip! I am pinning this to my Possible 2013 Races Board!
Yeah! The great thing about this one is that you can pin for any year in the next few years and you are guaranteed a rocking medal!!!!
This sounds pretty rad!
RIght?>?!?!
I thought about this, but we are typically in Hawaii the first week of December for a Fox event / the Triple Crown and the ONLY way I will miss that is for the Disney Moms Panel training. I am going to apply again this year and this time I will not drop out due to date conflicts. *Fingers crossed* hopping to make it through!
hoping NOT hopping. Though if I make it to the Disney Moms Panel I WILL be hopping!!!
Hop away, J! Cheering for you!!!
I ran this in 2012 and it was pretty great. Not pancake flat but pretty darn close. Really nice weather when I ran it. For a smaller race, lots of crowd support, and the medal was nice (and that wasn’t even one of the limited series!). I would do it again, and probably will sometime, but this year it’ll be too soon after my last triathlon to get enough marathon-specific training in (which was my problem last year).
You should think about the 1/2, if nothing else but for the chance to get yourself into the challenge! Halves or fulls count for that Milky Way or Intergalactic challenge
If I lived even remotely within driving distance, I’d be all over this race series. Race fees, plus hotel, plus airfair = not gonna happen. So sad.
