The Olympics, Revisted.

The 2012 Olympics have come to an end, and this year, I was somewhat proven wrong.

While I may not have scheduled any of my time around the games, I did lose a few precious hours of sleep just “watching the end” of a match / routine / race more times than I’d like to admit, simply because the television was on.

Additionally, I did attend a party on opening ceremonies night – which meant I did subject myself to hours of weirdness, along with a few fleeting glances at the closing ceremonies last night – I mean, c’mon, Spice Girls. I had to.

So, I will admit: though I was a bit BAH HUMBUG about the whole Olympics in general – there WERE some moments that just…well…rocked.

Oscar Pistorius and Kirani James exchange bibs (source)

After an intense 400-meter race, Oscar Pistorious (“Blade Runner”) and Kirani James (winner of the semi-final) swapped bibs. That was so super cool and just made me proud of their sportsmanship and the inspiration they could provide to each other.

Goucher + Flanagan (source)

Marathoning rivals Kara Goucher and Shalane Flanagan are marathon powerhouses! They push and inspire each other and performed awesomely in the women’s marathon, finishing 10th and 11th, respectively. They represented Team USA with gusto and proved that friendship is stronger than anything.

MEB. He is just freaking awesome – won the Men’s Trials in Eugene and went on yesterday to take 4th – at 37 years old in 2 hours, 11 minutes and 6 seconds!!! AMAZING. He is an embodiment of the American Dream.

So, as you can see – the Olympics did end up melting my heart a little 😉 Maybe by the time Rio rolls around, I’ll be even more interested…only time will tell! 😉

What was your favorite Olympic moment?

  1. I have to admit that I was really into it in the beginning, but as I kept having to stay up too late because of the broadcast protocols, I just read spoilers and lost some sense of excitement and watched a lot less. I remember watching the Olympics as far back as I can remember (1996, lol) because of gymnastics and then in 2000 I was a track runner and was GLUED to all that, even the stuff leading up to the Olympics. Nowadays, I like watching too many things to keep up — thank goodness for the Internet.

    • Yes, the Internet definitely played an interesting role in this years Olympics! Since I wasn’t concerned about seeing/hearing spoilers it was okay, but I could understand the frustration of those who were living for the excitement and thrill of seeing those moments! The only way to be totally safe is to attend, I guess!! 🙂

  2. Oh my gosh! So many moments to choose from! The final of the men’s 10K, Misty & Kerri winning gold one more time, the women’s gold medal in soccer, and of course the Spice Girls in the closing ceremony! I’m such an Olympics junkie.

    • The Spice Girls made me so happy….though I was shocked to see Posh with long hair? I guess I haven’t been following her very closely recently, haha! …and Ginger looks WAY better now than before!!!
