10 before 7; not 10-7.

^This title ^ made more sense in my head when I was running 😉 However, I’ll try to explain what I was thinking in my running-brain…and you know I love to tell stories, so here we go:

Me and a very special Princess 🙂

When I worked on the Dream Squad at the Magic Kingdom, we had several pieces of gear on us at any time: a stack of maps, times guides, trading pins, and of course, the ubiquitous Nextel radio. We had one headset in at all times, so we could hear the operations (ops) line, for important updates like ride closures, weather conditions or any other pertinent announcement that could effect the park, or more specifically, the zone we were in.

Since the ops line was vital for all Cast in frontline positions, it was recommended that if you had to make any sort of announcement, it should be brief – unless of course, you were the Duty manager, then – okay, you had a little more leeway 😉

But I digress…wait, what was I saying? Oh, yes! Brief. Concise. To to point! How can we achieve this?

Scanner codes! We didn’t use all of them, of course, but there were a few favorites, including:

  • 10-1 (which was often used simply as “one-oh-one”) – Down, not operating…used in a sentence: “Due to electrical activity, The Magic Carpets of Aladdin are 101.”
  • 10-4: Understood.
  • 10-7: Out of Service.*
  • 10-8: In Service.*

* So yes, 10-7 and 10-8. We used those codes in Attractions operations as well, as in “The Swiss Family Treehouse is 10-7 for the evening, all clear,” or “Good morning, Magic Kingdom, The Enchanted Tiki Room is 10-8 and ready for guests.”

Got it? Now, back to my run.

I woke up this morning at 4 AM – I guess I was just so excited for this run! After a few sips of water, I caught a few more winks before popping up before my 5 AM alarm, then I was at the gym by 5:07. My BIG goal today was running 10 miles before work, but also had a few adjusted goals too – say, what happened on Tuesday happened again, I’d cut the treadmill run to 7 and run 3 outdoors. Or, if ANYTHING was sore, I’d cut to 9, because, you know, well, I don’t want to be sore all day, that doesn’t sound very fun.

So, it was just me and the treadmill (and Pandora, of course) – we were ticking off miles on a progression run, starting at 6.0, that first mile I bumped it up a notch with each .1 passed, completing that warm up at 7.0 – from there, .1 each mile passed, so 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 and so forth…until I reached 7.5, stayed there a while, then bumped up, up, up, ending the run strong at 8.5 (my regular 800 pace).

10 miles, 8:16 pace, BAM.

I was so excited to have that run logged before our trip out of town (leaving this afternoon to visit hubs fam in Iowa) and felt great to end this month at 120 miles, even. My year total is currently 808 – smooth sailing to my 1K goal for 2012!

So, to wrap it up, I ran 10 miles before 7 AM, and after a few months of lower miles, I officially feel BACK IN THE GAME. Definitely not 10-7! 😉

Do you have a 2012 mileage goal? Oh, and do you have trouble with coherent thoughts when you’re running?

Check out my latest post on Beyond Distance here. Today, it’s about preparing for a race…last minute!

  1. I love the feeling of completing a long run early in the morning. But I hate that feeling of having to wake up to get that long run done. Nice job today! And have fun!

    • Thanks, Robin! Yeah, that wake up call is a little rough, especially when the bed is so comfy!!!

  2. I am so looking forward to seeing both of you and I hope that the hot Iowa weather isn’t too much for you to enjoy running in my neighborhood. I also hope we can go for a bicycle ride together on our trail system. Have a safe flight!

    • We’re excited! I checked the weather and it’s virtually the same here or there 🙂

  3. Wow! That’s a really impressive run. You have a great speed and to be able to do that so early in the morning? I’m envious!

    • Thanks, girl! I think I was a bundle of nervous energy due to our plane trip coming up this afternoon! Also, I had taken an unscheduled rest day on Wednesday so my legs were ready to run!! 🙂

    • Thanks, gal!!! I know what you mean, before work is dicey – I know that I often have to weight the two: get more sleep now, or have a run cut into my precious after work hours?! It’s definitely hard sometimes.

Hope you also have a great Labor Day weekend 🙂

  4. Awesome job!!! Thats an amazing feat!! My goal for 2012 is just to hit 10miles. The farthest I’ve done is 7.7 so far, but I’ll get there!! Spalove!

  5. Awesome!! It always feels so good to get the mileage done in the morning.

Thinking things are funnier and coherent while on a run is something I do a lot! And then when it comes to putting those thoughts down they are never quite as witty as I thought they were. Have a fun Labor Day!

  6. You’re going to blow right by your mileage goal! After I set a goal of 1,000 miles a few years ago, and then ended up hurt, I started focusing more on how I feel rather than the mileage. It kind of made going beyond 1,000 even more special last year, and this year I’ll probably hit 1,000 sometime in late October.
