When I realized that my coach had me running 20 miles on November 10, (Wine and Dine half day) I thought about where I would want to do my extra 7 miles – and as soon as I realized that Mickey’s Jingle Jungle 5K was that morning, I registered immediately for my very first runDisney 5K!
As we drew closer to the 5K date, I coordinated with two #FitFluential friends, Rachel and Kristine, who were also registered – and we decided that we would “fun run” the event together since we all (crazily) were running the half that evening, too. So, with a plan of dressing “Christmassy” and each others cellphone numbers/twitter information saved, we were prepared for a morning full of holiday cheer!
After popping out of bed @ 6 AM, I got on my festive race outfit, comprised of my (old) Old Navy tech top, lulu shorty shorts and Team Sparkle skirt + race legs. After a little breakfast of cereal, I headed out to Disney’s Animal Kingdom via rental car for the start of the race!!
Once I arrived there, I was so excited for the festivities that I forgot to write down where I parked (fortunately, it was easy to find the car later, lol). I headed over to where all the action was and somehow ran into my pals at the Mickey Miles Podcast and was interviewed! Check it out here, my bit comes on around 6 minutes and 35 seconds in!! Yay! Thanks, Michelle and Mike for the opportunity 🙂
Soon enough, I received messages from Rachel and Kristine and we all met up! Rachel had the cutest ears and Kristine was rocking an adorable bow tie!!!
We chatted about our action plan (basically: take it easy, take pictures and HAVE FUN!) and headed to the corrals before long, ready to rock the 3.1 miles ahead of us!
Rachel was telling us all about her cool Nike shoes (red! so cute) and we were just chatting excitedly about everything: running, Disney, racing…and the music started to play! We were jamming in the corrals…and then it was go time! Wheeeee!
The first part of the race was through the parking lot, but it was festive and fun with decorations and characters – even my favorite parade song:
Yeah!! Soon enough, we had headed into the park! What fun to run through an unopened Animal Kingdom!
So cool! We were maintaing a really jaunty pace…we called it a “prance” – of about 10 min/mile or so. We sometimes changed our formation but always kept together! Kristine had never been in the park before so Rachel and I had fun pointing out things to her in the park (“…and now, we are in Africa!”) Hah, you don’t get to do that everyday!
When we see short character lines, we headed over to grab a pic! This one ^^ with Donald was fun….and though the Goofy line was long…how could we not?
Santa Goofy actually had to take a lil break to eat some cookies and milk so we had to wait for about 5 minutes…it was kind of funny to see other runners pass us by and wonder what we were lined up for…
Sadly, the 3.1 went way faster than any 3.1 I had EVER run! We were having wayyy too much fun! So we made sure to really savor that finish line moment!! Wish we had an image of crossing, as well all linked arms before receiving our medals! 🙂
The medal was so cute! WE felt super proud and energized for the rest of our day, too – so glad I was able to spend the morning with these ladies!! The race was untimed, but I think we finished in about 40 something minutes.
This race was about $50, but in my opinion, it was worth every penny!! One of the neatest things about this event was that there were so many people out there from all walks of life…old, young, fit, “working on it” type people and LOTS of families! What a great opportunity to share something special like this with the people you love!
Along with the cute and commemorative medal, we received cotton tees, too (ETA: image above, thanks Pam for the request) – I will wear that with pride and great memories 😀
So, if you are thinking of dipping your toes into a runDisney event…I highly recommend their 5Ks! Low-pressure, but LOTS of fun!
Have you ever run a runDisney 5K?
