Two years ago, I ran my first 26.2 with DONNA. It was my first time in Jacksonville, and I was fresh off a few days of incredibly intense and inspiring events where I met many fundraising movers and shakers, courageous survivors, and powerful members of the healthcare community.
It was just a few months after my disappointment at Space Coast Marathon, and though I was hopeful for a PR, the biggest drive for me to FINISH that day was much bigger than me – it was the idea that I could help BE THE FINISH – for the marathon, and for breast cancer.
Since then, I’ve been a proud Ambassador of this event, and a tireless advocate for the cause – and have had the incredible support of friends, family and even complete strangers, who have donated their time and dollars to the tune of more than $5,200 since my first fundraising season!
Since 2013, I’ve dreamed up a variety of different incentives, ideas, and other ways to raise awareness and money – from the “50 States Challenge,” to Instagram photo contests, a Starbucks-themed giveaway, I’ve had a blast working out ways to help my supporters have fun with their donation. Although some ideas worked better than others (my “Thankful November” idea was kind of a bust), I’ve enjoyed using my creativity to connect more people to the cause – because really, that’s the most important thing to me.
Today, I received a fundraising request via snail mail from another cause that I support – a charity for disabled veterans. Inside the fancy envelope, they had sent over a series of holiday cards and return address stickers, as a special gift – but what really caught my eye was the letter they included.
As soon as I sealed up my donation to them, and walked my envelope to the mailbox, I knew I had to share their wise words about GIVING. You see, many people think that their donations don’t matter if they’re not followed by a series of “00’s.” I know that I sometimes feel guilty to give a little, but here’s the truth – EVERY CENT DOES COUNT.
Here’s my .02…are you ready?
All it takes is .02!
Seriously. 2 cents a day for one year = $7.30. Doesn’t that sounds crazy? Well, it’s true! And if you’re a “high roller,” a nickel a day adds up to $18.25.
So, if you have been thinking about donating to a breast cancer charity – whether this month, or any other time of year, keep 26.2 with DONNA in your thoughts. It’s easy to donate – and always tax-deductible!
Thank you for reading, and for your continued support. Even a simple share of this message can go so far! ❤
